Charco Restaurant and Cafe @ USJ Sentral

Newly opened right under Cilantro culinary academy, Charco Restaurant and Cafe is managed by graduates from Cilantro itself. The location formerly housed Ali Cafe Kopitiam. The menu comprised of different Western and local dishes, from appetizer, main dishes right to desserts. Their specialties were charcoal made pasta and charcoal bread, both boast a healthy sheen of dark charcoal hue.

For appetizer we ordered an Italian Tomato Soup. Light and hearty at the same time, this soup goes really well with the crusty bread.

We also had a French onion soup with charcoal bread. Charco's version of onion soup was light with subtle flavours, sans the melted cheese toppings.

The salmon aglio alio with charcoal pasta. The charcoal pasta was drenched with a healthy douse of olive oil, making the dish smooth and velvety. Taste-wise it was on the bland side. A sprinkle of salt will help.

Normal pasta is available as well. Pictured above is creamy tomato mushroom pasta, with a slice of the signature charcoal bread. This creamy tomato pasta is more well excuted than the aglio olio version. I totally enjoyed this.

From their local section of the menu we tried the nasi lemak with bumbu chicken and curry laksa. The nasi lemak was presented beautifully in a long plate with all the sides: chicken, rice, peanuts, fried anchovies, eggs and vegetables.

The curry laksa was spicy and creamy, with plenty of vegetable toppings. Overall, the menu was interesting and we are eager to return to try other items. Price was average, with service charge of 10%.
