Visits to Sarawak will never be complete without sampling the famous kek lapis Sarawak. These intricate delicacies are made by compressing many layers of cakes together to form beautiful patterns, a pleasing feast to the eyes and taste buds. We saw many stalls outside the arts and souvenir shops selling boxes of kek lapis in every colors and patterns imaginable, and just looking at them makes me happy. Aside from the traditional flavours, there are plenty of creative new flavours to choose from. Flavours range from the normal sounding ones such as chocolate, coffee, pandan, fruit jams to the slightly surprising ones like cheese, mint, haw, watermelon and infused dried fruits and nuts.
Where to buy Kek Lapis Sarawak? There are a few kek lapis stalls along the row of old, charming one storey shop houses opposite Kuching Waterfront. Alternatively, you could buy straight from the factory situated opposite the river. Each box of cake cost RM10.00-RM15.00, depending on flavour.
